What an Elopement Day in Mammoth Lakes Looks Like

If you’ve been dreaming about skipping the big wedding and running away to the mountains instead—Mammoth Lakes might just be your spot. It has infinite off the beaten spot locations perfect for a secluded area to say your vows.

As a photographer who’s spent countless days chasing light around Mammoth, I wanted to share what a real elopement day here can actually look like—from the quiet start to the final golden moments.

Morning: Coffee & Hot Springs

While the sunrises, soak in the hot springs off the 395, sip coffee, and imagine how the rest of your wedding day will unfold.

Late Morning: Getting Ready & First Look

Once you’ve had breakfast and packed your day bag, it’s time to get ready. Most couples either get ready together or separately, depending on the mood they want. If you want to keep the surprise, a “first look” in the forest or by a quiet lakeshore is always sweet.

Midday: Ceremony with a View

For the ceremony, couples usually pick a time when the light feels soft—late morning or near sunset. Some say vows overlooking Minaret Vista, others hike out to a quiet ridge or stand barefoot by the lakeshore. There’s no one “right” spot—just whatever feels most you.

If you’re bringing family or friends, there are spots with easy access and stunning views. But if it’s just the two of you, we can hike a little farther to find a tucked-away spot where it’s only wind, mountains, and your vows.

Afternoon: Picnic, Exploring, and Soaking It In

After the ceremony, I always recommend taking a beat to just exist in the moment—have a picnic, pop champagne, or jump into the lake if you’re feeling bold. Some couples head to Mammoth Brewing Co. for a casual afternoon drink before heading out for sunset photos.

Evening: Sunset Portraits & Golden Hour Magic

When the sun starts to dip, Mammoth absolutely glows. Whether we’re hiking up a ridge, wandering through the meadows, or standing by the water, this is when the light hits perfectly. I like to keep things simple here—just gentle direction so you can stay connected and in the moment.

When the light fades, most couples wrap up the day with a fire, pizza, or a private dinner back at their cabin.
