Eloping at Olympic National Park: A Photographer’s Perspective (and Why It’s Extra Special to Me)

There’s something about Olympic National Park that just pulls you in. The way the fog rolls through the mossy trees, the salty air drifting in from the coast, and the way the mountains seem to appear out of nowhere — it’s a place that feels untouched, wild, and honestly, a little bit magical.

I’ve photographed a lot of incredible places, but Olympic holds a special place in my heart. In the summer of 2024, my partner and I got engaged here. What started as a foggy morning that obscured the mountains turned into a sunny afternoon with my fiance down on one knee amongst the wildflowers. That moment made the park feel like more than just a beautiful backdrop — it became part of my story.

So when couples reach out wanting to elope here, I get it.

Why Olympic National Park is Perfect for Elopements

The park is massive — like, nearly a million acres massive — and it’s one of the few places where you can go from alpine peaks to lush rainforests to wild coastline all in one day. Whether you picture saying your vows under towering evergreens, on a rocky beach at sunset, or with snow-capped mountains behind you, it’s all possible here.

A few favorite locations:

  • Hoh Rain Forest: Think towering moss-draped trees and filtered light that makes everything feel enchanted.
  • Ruby Beach: Iconic sea stacks, tide pools, and epic sunsets. It’s moody in the best way.
  • Hurricane Ridge: Panoramic mountain views without a crazy hike. Perfect for sunrise ceremonies.
  • Lake Crescent: Calm, turquoise water surrounded by dense forest — ideal for a peaceful ceremony or first look.

What to Know Before You Elope Here

  • Permits: Olympic National Park requires a Special Use Permit for ceremonies. It’s usually around $50–$100, and it’s pretty straightforward to apply for. I always help my couples through this process so it’s stress-free.
  • Timing: Summer and early fall are the most popular seasons, but spring and winter have their own unique beauty (and fewer crowds). Sunrise or weekday ceremonies help keep things intimate. Consider snowshoeing here in the winter for the most beautiful winter wonderland!
  • Accessibility: Some locations are super easy to reach by car, while others require a bit of hiking. You can make it as low-key or adventurous as you want.

From My Lens

As a photographer, what I love about Olympic is how dynamic the light is. The misty mornings create this soft, dreamy glow in the forest, while sunset at the beach can be golden one minute and moody the next. No two sessions here ever look the same — which makes every elopement feel unique and personal.

I always encourage couples to slow down, build in time to explore, and let the day unfold naturally. Some of my favorite moments aren’t the “posed” ones, but the quiet in-between: walking hand in hand down a trail, popping champagne by the lake, or running into the ocean fully clothed at the end of the night.

Why It Means So Much to Me

Coming back to photograph couples here after getting engaged myself would be the sweetest full-circle moment. I know firsthand how it feels to stand in this place and have a life-changing moment. And I love helping other couples create their own stories against the same backdrop that’s part of mine.

If you’re dreaming of an elopement that feels intimate, intentional, and connected to nature, Olympic National Park is one of the best places you could choose.
